With news organizations like the New York Times downsizing and making budget cuts, it was only a matter of a time before journalism schools followed suit.
Columbia is set to shrink its journalism school, which is the only Ivy League graduate journalism school. Steve Coll, the dean of the school, said that the school will gradually start accepting fewer students and will stop filling faculty vacancies.
"This adjustment will preserve our capacity for hands-on and intensive teaching that is a trademark of the school," he said in the e-mail to students, faculty and staff.
The graduate school, which was founded by Joseph Pulitzer over 100 years ago, will also be trying to raise more money for student scholarships, Cull said.
