In 2012 Princeton required a student who attempted to commit suicide in his dorm room to withdraw from the university for a year.
The university claimed that the student was in constant danger due to his history of suicide attempts. The student, who has since returned to Princeton, filed a federal lawsuit against the university, citing the embarrassment and loss of self-esteem that he suffered upon being forced to withdraw.
In November, Princeton filed a motion to have the lawsuit dismissed. Many universities share Princeton's controversial policy, and protestors have spoken out against the policy across college campuses, some of whom maintain that universities ban students who attempt suicide because they do not want their reputations to be tarnished.
