For the first time since March of 2006, the women’s lacrosse team lost at the hands of an unranked opponent.
The No. 4 Quakers suffered an 8-5 defeat to Johns Hopkins last night in Baltimore, marking their first loss of the season.
“I think Hopkins wanted it more. I think they beat us all over the field,” coach Karin Brower Corbett said. “They deserved it, Hopkins deserved the game.”
The Blue Jays (5-3) came out with a bang. Senior midfield Brianna Cronin put Hopkins on the board in the first three minutes of the game. The rest of the first half was dominated by the Blue Jays, as they held a 5-2 lead at halftime.
After Hopkins netted three unanswered goals at the start of the second half, Penn (6-1, 2-0 Ivy) was down 8-2, the largest margin of the game. The Quakers were unable to put away a third goal until 23:17 remained. Penn scored the final three goals of the game, but the Blue Jays effectively stalled and held on for the upset.
“We’re the better team, but we have gotten away with it over the past few games with some of our mistakes,” Corbett said. “This team outhustled us and really wanted it more.”
