The range of restaurants near campus attests to the variety of food available in the city, and most of it's pretty affordable. Philadelphia is most famous for its cheesesteaks, salt pretzels and hoagies. Abner's, at 38th and Chestnut streets, Lee's Hoagie House, at 40th and Walnut streets, and Billybob's, at 40th and Spruce streets, are the campus's steak and hoagie places. Don't have time or patience to wait for a sandwich? Lunch trucks are perfect for a quick bite between classes. Located on almost every corner – and at the more popular locations, two or three to a street – they dish out everything from Chinese and Greek food to grilled cheese and tofu, usually at quite reasonable prices. Some campus favorites are Le Anh's Chinese food at 36th and Spruce streets and Rami's Luncheonette, at 40th and Locust streets. Everyone's favorite convenience stores, WaWa and UniMart, also offer sandwiches and quick snacks. The WaWa at 38th and Spruce streets also has Taco Bell Express, which features items from the Mexican fast-food menu. Skolnik's in Houston Hall is a consistent favorite for bagels and a variety of cream cheese spreads. Houston Hall is also home to several other food outlets, including Burger King and a hoagie shop operated by WaWa. My Favorite Muffin, a recent addition to campus, has gained popularity for its muffins and bagels. Philadelphia magazine voted its muffins Best of Philly for 1993. Another newcomer is Fingers, Wings and Other Things, which opened this summer in the former basement of Smokes. When you have a little more time to sit down for a meal, there are many restaurants around campus from which to choose. Kelly and Cohen's, at 38th and Walnut streets, serves traditional dinner fare and is a popular spot for weekend brunches. Next door, Poor Richard's serves similar food, specializing in hoagies. On the same block, Fiesta Pizza, is a popular breakfast spot. Of course, college would not be complete without pizza. Domino's, Allegro's at 40th and Spruce streets and 36th and Chestnut streets, The Roost at 40th and Walnut, Powelton Pizza at 36th Street and Lancaster Avenue and College Pizza near 40th and Walnut streets, all deliver. More upscale selections can be had at Boccie, near 40th and Locust streets. Chinese, Japanese and Thai food is available around campus, too. For Chinese, there is Won's near 40th and Walnut streets, Beijing in front of the Quad on Spruce Street and Hong Kong Cafe on 39th Street between Walnut and Chestnut streets. Genji, at 40th and Spruce streets, serves Japanese food. For Thai food, there is Thai Singa House and South of Siam, both near 40th and Chestnut streets, and Thai Garden, at 45th and Spruce streets. There are many Indian restaurants as well – New Delhi at 40th and Chestnut streets, India Palace on Chestnut Street near 38th Street and Tandoor India at 40th and Sansom streets. For Tex-Mex, there is Chili's at 38th and Chestnut streets and Casa Mexicana at 40th and Chestnut streets. On Sansom Street between 34th and 36th streets, there are a few good sit-down restaurants for those with the time and money. Le Bus, The White Dog Cafe and The New Deck Tavern line the street. Two restaurants in the center of campus, The Palladium and Gold Standard, offer more expensive food. The Shops at Penn Food court has standard mall food – burgers, pizza, salads and ice cream. Koch's Deli at 43rd and Locust streets is a perennial favorite, with bagels and big deli sandwiches for anyone willing to wait in huge Sunday morning lines. Another student favorite, Smokey Joe's, the 'Pennstitution' on 40th Street and Walnut, has food, beer and wooden booths in which countless students have carved their names. If you feel tired of dorm food or eating out, there are supermarkets nearby – Thriftway at 43rd and Walnut streets. If you have a car, there is the 24-hour Pathmark at 38th and Grays Ferry Avenue. There are several bars around campus, too. Smokes is, of course, a traditional favorite and Murphy's Tavern, at 44th and Spruce streets has become a popular student hang-out in the last few years. Cavanaugh's at 38th and Chestnut streets is also favored for its food and drink. And Billybobs' 40th Street Underground has become a favorite for many citywide.
