One person was injured in a shooting at the intersection of 40th and Walnut streets on Tuesday evening.

The altercation occurred around 10:10 p.m. on Nov. 11, a Philadelphia Police Department officer told The Daily Pennsylvanian. An 11:38 p.m. UPennAlert stated that the 4000 block of Walnut Street was “all clear” and that activity could resume in the area after foot and vehicle traffic in the area had been restricted for over an hour.

Vice President for Public Safety Kathleen Shields Anderson told the DP around 11:05 p.m. that both Philadelphia Police and Penn Police officers were on the scene, and that Walnut Street would remain closed during the investigation.

An 11:24 p.m. UPennAlert stated that the 4000 block of Walnut Street was “deemed safe by Police.” Traffic resumed between 40th and 41st streets, and the caution tape that had restricted foot traffic around the Rotunda and the University City Cinemark theater was removed by that time.

Shields Anderson added that Philadelphia Police will lead the investigation because it was a gunshot-related incident.

A request for comment was left with the Philadelphia Police Department.

Officers discovered a “complainant with gunshot wounds” at the scene, who was “transported immediately to the hospital for treatment of their injuries,” according to Shields Anderson. She added that there were no additional reported injuries.

Shortly after the incident, a UPennAlert stated that the shooter had not been detained and was last seen driving westbound in a gray sedan. The suspect’s vehicle was "located" at 49th and Aspen streets around 10:40 p.m., according to police scanners.

The DP could not confirm whether the suspect has been detained as of 12:55 a.m. on Nov. 12.

“Police remain on scene conducting investigation and Walnut Street remains closed. Continue to avoid the area at this time,” a 10:50 p.m. alert stated.

A Philadelphia Police officer told the DP that the victim was taken to the hospital after sustaining at least one gunshot wound. The Division of Public Safety advised Penn community members in the initial alert to stay out of the immediate area and “take cover and remain still if shots are being fired at or near you.”

College first year Mishal George — who is also a DP staffer — said that she was at the University City Cinemark when she witnessed two men arguing outside of the movie theater’s bathroom. According to George, the two individuals went outside after the argument got “more aggressive.”

“A minute later, there were two gunshots and everyone who was there went to the front glass doors,” George said. “We were watching as one of the men ran away and then one of them had been shot in the foot.”
