Jon McLauhglin, Penn's offensive line coach for the last three years, has officially been named offensive coordinator, the Athletic Department announced yesterday.

The promotion was first reported by Daily Pennsylvanian senior staff writer Andrew Scurria on Feb. 19. However, the official announcement came six weeks later due to paperwork.

"This is a great privilege to be a part of such an incredible tradition," McLaughlin said in a press release. "I'm looking forward to working more with these fantastic kids that are ambitious, intelligent and love football. [Head coach Al Bagnoli] has had so much success here, it is an honor to be in this position and to play a role on a staff with such great coaches."

McLauhglin will retain his O-line coaching duties as he becomes the fourth offensive coordinator since the 2005 season. The Alfred University graduate's unit has been a strength for the Quakers, allowing the second-fewest sacks (12) for the second-fewest lost yards (88) in the Ivy League last season. In the two previous seasons it gave up a total of 19 sacks, and in 2006 three linemen earned All-Ivy honors.

"This was an easy choice for me," Bagnoli said in the release. McLaughlin "has an excellent background and football IQ, excellent organizational skills and terrific relationships with all of our coaches and players."

McLaughlin will replace Bill Schmitz, who came to Penn before the 2007 season from Alabama-Birmingham. Penn averaged 19 points per game in Schmitz's two years, but the program announced it would not renew his contract 10 days after the end of the 2008 season.
