Senior swimming captain Chaz Maul is familiar with breaking things.
After fracturing his hand in the beginning of the season, Maul jumped back into the pool this Saturday and shattered a long-standing Dartmouth pool record in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 56.05 seconds.
The Quakers swam against Yale and Dartmouth in Hanover, N.H., beating the Big Green, 221-79, and falling to the Bulldogs, 155.5-115.5.
"The guys beat Dartmouth really easily," coach Mike Schnur said. "We killed them."
Yale, however, was a different story.
"We battled with Yale in a lot of stuff," Schnur said. "We were really competitive with them."
Maul's record was only one of six pool records set in the meet.
"I feel wonderful," said Maul. "It was a tough season, with a couple of injuries, but I got it together in the last few weeks, and it's been quite a ride here"
Maul swam in an outside lane, which is not a prime location, but was still able to beat the old pool record -- 57.05 seconds - by more than a second.
"I went after it, and I knew that something was going to happen, and I had a great swim," Maul said. "I was really happy when I looked at the scoreboard, that's for sure"
Besides Maul, another record-breaker was Yale's top competitor, Alex Righi, who broke pool records in the 50 free, 100 free and 200 medley relay.
"Alex is a one-man wrecking crew," Schnur said. "If Alex wasn't on their team, we would've won the meet."
Junior freestyler James Fee also added points to the Quakers' side with first-place finishes in the 200 and 500 freestyle events.
Neck and neck with Yale's Goksu Bicer throughout the 200 free, Fee was able to break away in the last 50 yards, winning with a time of 23.98 seconds.
Both Fee and Maul are looking forward to the Ivy League championships, where Maul hopes to change his approach.
"Last year I put too much stress on the in-season meets and less on Ivies because I had the top seat going in," Maul said. "This year I'm switching it around. The season was cut short, and I'm focusing on Ivies."
His performance Saturday is helping to motivate him after a season on the bench.
"This was a nice little perk before my main meet," he said.
