Sports Update | Wrestling trounces Princeton, falls to Michigan

UPDATED Nov. 22, 3:45 p.m.

Junior 125-pounder Rollie Peterkin started off the action with a 15-0 technical fall over Princeton's Robert Benitez, and the Penn wrestling team won all 10 weightclasses en route to a 47-0 romp over the visiting Tigers.

But later in the afternoon, despite an early upset pin by 141-pounder Rick Rappo over No. 5 Kellen Russell, the Quakers were unable to complete their upset bid against No. 9 Michigan, falling, 22-15.

Highlights of the earlier match included a first-period pin by Penn 133-pound sophomore Bryan Ortenzio and a 20-5 technical fall by senior captain Cesar Grajales at 149.

The Quakers dominated the action from start to finish, never giving Princeton -- which went winless in 2007-08 -- room to breathe.

Against Michigan, the Quakers took some early hits, in the form of losses by Peterkin at 125 and Ortenzio at 133, but were able to score 15 straight points and take a 15-6 lead.

The Wolverines would not be outdone, sweeping the next three weightclasses and adding a pin of their own by third-ranked 197-pounder Tyrel Todd to gain a 19-15 lead.

Down by four, the Red and Blue needed senior heavyweight Trey McLean to deliver at least a major decision -- which yields four points for the winning team -- to stay alive.

Instead, McLean lost a nail-biter to Michigan's Eddie Phillips, 6-3, and the Quakers tasted defeat for the first time this season.
