Just when the Quakers seemed to be hitting their offensive stride, their hopes of an Ivy crown went - like their quarterback - tumbling to the turf.
The Red and Blue suffered a 34-27 loss to Brown at Franklin Field, after junior quarterback Kyle Olson - making his first start and playing effectively through most of the first half - sustained an injury to his left knee late in the second quarter. X-rays are pending, but coach Al Bagnoli speculated that the signal-caller may have suffered an ACL injury, which would likely end his season.
Quarterbacks Keiffer Garton and Robert Irvin split time behind center the rest of the way for Penn (4-3, 3-1 Ivy), with Garton seeing his first career action with the offensive unit. Though each player led scoring drives, Irvin's two second-half fumbles loomed especially large as the Bears (5-2, 4-0) pulled away in the final frame.
Brown quarterback Michael Dougherty led the Bears' attack against Penn's No. 1-ranked Ivy defense, and enjoyed great success through the air. He compiled 234 yards and four touchdowns, keeping the Quakers' secondary on its heels all day.
