Sports Brief | Penn hoops rated 34th prestigious

The argument between Penn and Princeton fans about the caliber of their basketball teams may have just been settled objectively.

ESPN released a quantitative ranking of the "prestige" levels of 300 NCAA Division I basketball programs since 1984-85. The Quakers came in at No. 34, the highest of any Ivy League program.

Princeton earned a No. 40 ranking while no other Ivy League school cracked the top 220.

The ranking assigned numerical values for achievements and disappointments in the regular and postseasons, as well as for individual honors such as All-Americans and top-10 draft picks.

The Quakers earned 102 points thank to 12 NCAA Tournament appearances and an NCAA Tournament game win, though they lost points for eight losing seasons.

Penn narrowly beat out Alabama and St. John's; each earned 100 points.

Not surprisingly, the top school was Duke by a wide margin.
