Big Red nab key UMass transfer

Only a few months after winning its first Ivy League title in 20 years, the Cornell men's basketball coaches are not standing pat.

They're working to insure that the team stays stronger for longer and, having added Univeristy of Massachusetts transfer Max Groebe according to The Cornell Basketball Blog, the staff just took a big leap in the right direction.

Two years ago, when Groebe was initially looking at colleges, he showed interest in Penn, even scheduling a visit before choosing to join the Minutemen. He again considered the Quakers after deciding to transfer following UMass head coach Travis Ford's departure for Oklahoma State this offseason.

But for the second time, he chose not to come to Philadelphia, this time opting to play for the defending Ivy League champs.

The 6'9" 205 lb. shooting guard played in 19 games for the National Invitational Tournament runners-up last season, averaging 2.1 points per game as a freshman. He missed the final six games of the season, though, due to a death in the family.

Due to eligibility restrictions, Groebe will sit the upcoming season out and will be able to play through 2012.

Groebe was born in Brazil but lived much of his early life in Germany. Thus, he played for the U18 German national team. He moved to Florida for high school, where he was named a McDonalds All-American nominee his senior year.

Representatives from Cornell were unable to comment due to Ivy League regulations.
