It was a weekend of mixed results for the men's and women's fencing teams.
They competed in the NCAA Regionals on Saturday in Madison, N.J., along with Princeton, Temple, Penn State, Haverford, North Carolina, Drew, Duke, Johns Hopkins, Stevens and Fairleigh Dickinson.
As expected, the Nittany Lions dominated the meet, winning in four of the six weapons.
But the Quakers were reasonably strong themselves. While only women's sabre Danielle Kamis came in first place in a weapon, seven other Quakers earned top-five finishes.
In men's sabre, Jon Berkowsky placed second while Matthew Kolasa was fifth.
Berkowsky's younger brother, Ron, was fourth in foil and Penn's only top-12 finisher in that category.
Anything lower than a top-12 finish likely means that ones NCAA hopes are slim at best.
Ben Wieder came in third to a pair of Tigers fencers in epee.
On the women's side, Ilana Sinkin and Zoya Abidikulova came in third and fourth, respectively, in foil.
Abigail Emerson finished seventh and is in a precarious position to advance.
In epee, Stephanie Wheeler is in an equally unsure position. She came in seventh, but was Penn's best finisher in that weapon.
Women's sabre was arguably the Quakers' strongest weapon of the day, with three top-10 fencers. Finishing in second, right behind Kamis, was Alexis Baran, while Cassandra Partyka came in ninth.
Who advances is calculated using a weighted average of season records and ones record in Regionals. While it has yet to be announced, it is likely that both Berkowskys, Wieder, Kolasa, Sinkin, Abidikulova, Kamis and Baran will make the NCAAs.
