Men's and women's fencing 4-0 at MIT

The Penn men's and women's fencing teams couldn't have done much better at the MIT Multi-meet yesterday, both beating North Carolina, MIT, Brandeis and Brown.

The result came a day after both teams completed a 2-1 outing at Harvard.

Highlighting the meet at MIT was the men's match against Brandeis, which was locked in a 13-13 tie heading into the last individual matchup of the day. Penn's Steve Gavalas recorded a 4-0 win in the foil to win the match for the Quakers.

While the men's day was characterized by tension, the women's was by domination, as they won 9-0 in sabre over Brandeis and 9-0 in foil against the Tar Heels.

The Quakers will be home to face Princeton Wednesday.

Gymnasts edge Owls, romp over Ursinus

The Penn gymnastics team used strong performances in the beam and the floor exercises to top host Temple along with Ursinus Saturday at McGonigle Hall.

Senior Leah Moon won the vault, earning a 9.475, and junior Emily Petkun continued her phenomenal season by capturing first place on the floor.

The Owls held the lead after the first two events, the vault and the uneven bars. But Penn responded, winning the beam as a team, led by junior Laura Duros' second-place finish in the event and the floor, with Petkun leading the way.

The Quakers finished with 188.300 points to earn their second consecutive meet victory. Temple was second at 186.725. Ursinus finished well-behind both of its opponents with a score of 178.200.
