Swim teams defeat Middies

Saturday was all about the Pats in men's swimming.

Junior Pat Maloney and freshman Pat Gallagher combined for four of Penn's seven first-place finishes at Sheerr Pool against Navy.

Gallagher led off the 200-yard medley relay with the backstroke, followed by Maloney with butterfly in the third leg, earning their first victory of the meet.

Maloney won the 200 individual medley and the 200 butterfly while Gallagher took the 500 freestyle.

"Pat [Gallagher's] 500 was awesome," Penn coach Mike Schnur said. "It was fun to watch."

On paper, Navy seemed to have the advantage entering the meet. The Midshipmen beat Yale and Brown, teams that both defeated the Quakers this year.

However, led by Maloney and Gallagher, the Quakers overpowered the Midshipmen, 130-113, and improved their record to 4-5 and2-4 in the Eastern Intercollegiate Swimming League.

"We stepped up better today than we have all year," Schnur said. "We deserved the win."

On the women's side, Penn trounced Navy, 175-124. The Quakers (6-4, 3-4 Ivy) swept the top three spots in four events and earned nine first-place finishes.

"I thought they would be tired, but they weren't," Schnur said of the women's team. "They had a terrific day."

In the 200-yard free, senior Katie Stores and sophomores Jessica Aiello and Margot Newcomer swept the race by garnering the top three spots.

Sophomore diver Janis Scanlon earned two second-place finishes at one meter and three meters despite performing two new dives.
