Penn alum DeRosa signs on with Rangers

One of the two Penn graduates currently in Major League Baseball has found a new home.

Former Quakers football and baseball star Mark DeRosa signed a minor-league contract Wednesday with the Texas Rangers and was invited to spring training with the Major League club.

DeRosa had spent the first seven years of his career with the Atlanta Braves, batting .266 with 17 home runs and 99 RBI in 393 total games.

In DeRosa's last season, which was cut short by a knee injury on Sept. 25, he batted .239 with three home runs and 31 RBI.

The Passaic, N.J., native spent his first four Major League seasons as primarily a shortstop, but in 2002, he settled into a new role as a utility infielder. Last season, he played 20 games or more at shortstop, second base and third base.

DeRosa graduated from Penn in 1997 and departed the football program second all-time in passing yards with 3,885. He currently sits fourth on the all-time list.

Brown goalkeeper Chris Gomez was chosen by FC Dallas with the 28th pick in this weekend's MLS Superdraft.

Gomez will be the 14th Ivy Leaguer to play MLS and one of seven current players.

He did not miss a minute in the goal for the Bears, who finished their Ivy League campaign 4-3-0 and went 8-7-2 overall, including a 4-0 shutout at Penn.

He recorded six shutouts and finished the season with a 1.13 goals against average.
