Sports Brief: Exeter's Lewis expected to decide on school soon

The Penn men's basketball team may land another recruit this week as Phillips Exeter Academy (N.H.) senior Cameron Lewis said he will decide between committing to the Quakers or Columbia by the end of the week.

The 6-foot-8 small forward has averaged 16 points, nine rebounds, 1.5 assists and 4.5 blocks per game in his team's first two contests this year, and his coach had nothing but praise for the Washington, D.C., native.

Lewis "can rebound and defend, and is relentless on the boards," Exeter head coach Malcom Wesselink said.

He added that Lewis has been well-coached and has been able to quickly understand the "complex" strategy that Wesselink uses.

Wesselink said that Lewis' one drawback is his lack of an outside shot.

"If he could shoot a three-point shot he'd be going to Stanford," Wesselink said.

However, the coach had a more reasonable expectation for his star -- that Lewis could learn to shoot the 15-foot jumper.

Lewis said that he had always wanted to go to Penn and that he has family connections to the university. However, he was very impressed by the Lions' program, and will consult with his family this week to help him make his final decision.

"There's nothing the school can do anymore," Lewis said.

He is just waiting, he added, until the moment "when you feel right."

At this point, it is up to him and his family, but Lewis did offer a hint to where he is leaning right now.

"I think Penn has a slight edge," Lewis said.
