Softball gains experience in Florida

Over course of 10-game stint at NCAA's Rebel Spring Games, Moore has better grip on team

Nicki Borgstadt stood on the mound for Penn with a runner on second, needing only two outs to lock up the complete-game victory over Butler.

As Penn coach Leslie King Moore said, "She kind of 'gutsed' it out."

Borgstadt, a senior starter, recorded a strikeout and induced a flyout to center to retire the 31st and 32nd batters she faced to clinch a 3-2 Quakers victory over the Bulldogs.

That win, however, was only the start of a long week for Penn at the NCAA's Rebel Spring Games in Orlando, Fla.

Overall, the Quakers finished 3-7, defeating Niagara, 4-1, midway through the week and concluding with a 10-4 win over Fairleigh Dickinson.

However, the week did feature a rough stretch in which the Quakers lost five straight, including a 14-0 pounding at the hands of Central Michigan.

Despite the losses, Moore believes that this trip was a successful one.

"I certainly know more about my team," Moore said. "It showed some things we need to work on. ... Our pitching needs to tighten up."

She also added that the team needs to improve its defense.

Senior Erin O'Brien was Penn's offensive star of the week, entering the last day of competition in Florida with a .462 batting average in six games, including a home run and two doubles.

Moore was more than pleased with O'Brien's performance. "She not only hit the ball, but hit it very hard," she said.

Freshmen Kim May, Teresa Leyden and Brandi King, sophomore Katie Hughes and junior Zahya Hantz also found themselves above the .300 plateau.

Penn's 3-7 spring break pushes its record to 4-8 overall, including an opening day split with Rider.

After some well-earned rest, the Quakers will travel to Newark, Del., for a matchup with the Delaware Blue Hens tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.
