Quakers post strong finishes at Raleigh Relays

Brian Chaput once again demonstrated why he deserved his national championship.

The Penn senior javelin thrower took first place for the second time in two meets and led the way for the Red and Blue at the adidas Raleigh Relays at the Paul Derr Stadium on the campus of North Carolina State University in Raleigh, N.C., this past weekend.

Both the Penn men's and women's teams competed and both teams had numerous finishers in the top 20.

The men were, once again, led by Chaput, who won the javelin competition with a throw of 77.5 meters. Chaput improved on his second place performance from last year's Raleigh Relays by nearly 10 meters. Sophomore Jim Malizia finished in 16th place behind Chaput. Also, senior Justin King placed fifth in the discus throw.

The Quakers runners also took home a number of top 20 finishes. Senior Emily Logan finished third in the 5000- meter run.

Sophomore Courtney Jaworski turned in a seventh-place finish in the 800-meter run, while fellow classmate Mark Materna placed 16th in the 1500-meter run.

The men's relay teams were also able to complete the meet with strong finishes. The 4x800 team took sixth place and the 4x200 team took 19th. The 4x1500 team took third overall.

The Penn women's team was also led by its field events.

Senior javelin thrower Kai Ivory threw 151'03", which garnered her the second-best mark in Penn history and led her to a third-place finish overall in the javelin.

Freshman Catrina Chisholm, who is quickly becoming a contender in the Ivies in the hammer competition, took 19th in the event.

The women also showed up strong in the relay events. The 4x800 team posted a strong eighth-place finish and led all the Quakers relay teams.

The 4x400 team took 17th place, while the 4x200 and 4x100 teams took 25th and 33rd place,respectively.

The Quakers will take their successes and compete next Sunday back home at Franklin Field in the Penn Invitational.
