Penn football had a busy offseason adding bodies to maintain the program.
While 27 incoming freshmen will compete to make headlines, two other additions will remain behind-the-scenes.
Their names are Jim Fortune and Klea Armstrong. And neither will don a helmet.
Fortune assumes a new role on the staff as the audio/visual coordinator. Armstrong takes over for Jeff Masci as the assistant director of football operations.
"We've had some administrative changes," Penn coach Al Bagnoli said. "The Ivy League makes you restructure your staff.
"There were actually two part-time positions cut and they made a part-time into a full-time. So we're a little bit short in terms of numbers of coaches."
Fortune's primary responsibilities are filming games and editing the tapes, which will allow the coaching staff to break down opponents more expediently.
"It's really good to have a guy like that around, because the coaches obviously have a lot of strain on their time in terms of players and watching film," said Matt Dukes, Penn's starting center and team captain. "Now we've got a guy to put it out where players can watch it [and] coaches can watch it and have it there -- have it done."
Fortune spent four years at Holy Cross as a student assistant with the football team. He then served two years as a video intern with the Detroit Lions.
Armstrong will assist Director of Football Operations James Urban. She will help him plan roadtrips and set up special events.
"You need two people because when someone's on the field, you have to have someone in the office answering phones, e-mails and all that other stuff," Bagnoli said.
Before joining the staff, Armstrong, a Philadelphia native, attended McGill University in Montreal.
"James has really been doing that for the past few years, and it's grown to be such a tremendous job," Dukes said. "It's a large operation if you think about the number of people involved.
"There's 110-plus guys on the team [and] all the coaches. Any extra people would make James' job easier."
