Onyekwe picked in USBL draft with 61st pick
Should the NBA pass on Penn senior Ugonna Onyekwe in the June 26 draft, the two-time Ivy League Player of the Year has a backup to continue his basketball career -- the United States Basketball League.
The Brooklyn Kings selected Onyekwe in the seventh of eight rounds with the 61st pick in the draft. The London-native was the only Ivy League player to be drafted by the USBL. Other notable selections included high school phenom Lebron James, who went with the 18th pick and Oklahoma State's Melvin Sanders and Victor Williams at No. 4 and No. 28, respectively.
Self-described as "The League of Opportunity," the USBL is entering its 28th year and will feature 10 teams for the upcoming season. The league's 18th annual draft was held in Milford, Conn., yesterday afternoon.
Onyekwe is waiting to hear whether he will receive an invitation to the prestigious Chicago pre-draft camp, to be held from June 3-6.
Penn's senior excelled two weeks ago at the Portsmouth Invitational, a pre-draft camp that features only senior competitors. An Eastern Conference scout told The Daily Pennsylvanian that Onyekwe will likely receive an invitation to Chicago.
