With owner still in hospital, local deli reopens

Koch's Take Out, the popular West Philadelphia deli, started serving again on Thursday, despite the fact that its owner is confined to a hospital bed.

Bob Koch, the owner of the deli located at 43rd and Locust Streets, incurred multiple injuries when his car was broadsided at 48th and Walnut streets on Sunday, April 14. Koch is staying at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, recovering from a crushed left arm, a fractured left shoulder blade, and a broken leg.

Koch said his doctors believed that he would recover completely but would be in pain for several months, and that he will have to spend three months in a wheelchair.

The Deli was closed until the afternoon of Thursday, April 25, when Koch was cleared for a full recovery.

"We were closed until we found out exactly what would happen," Koch said from his hospital bed. "We will continue to be open with limited hours on Monday and Tuesday, closing at 4 p.m., rather than 7p.m."

Koch said he was thankful for the aid of his friends and family, particularly his from brother, who had helped him reopen his store. He also noted that he was appreciative of the attention Penn students have been paying him.

"I miss seeing everyone from Penn," Koch said. "A lot of people have stopped by and sent cards...it makes me feel good, really cared for. I appreciate it."
