MTV's 'Loveline' to heat up Penn's campus Feb. 13

The hosts of the popular love-and-relationship advice show will hold court in the Zellerbach Theatre Valentine's Day weekend. Concerned about your roommate's sweat sock fetish? Is your neighbor worried about his drug addiction? Does your significant other have bad breath? Relax, because Dr. Drew and Adam from MTV's hit advice show Loveline will be available to address all your questions on sex, drugs and relationships during a guest appearance in the Annenberg Center's Zellerbach Theatre February 13 at 8 p.m. The performance -- for which approximately 900 tickets will be available -- and other weekend activities will serve as the showcase events of a weekend-long Valentine's Day celebration coordinated by the Tangible Change Committee and co-sponsored by Connaissance, the Sophomore Class Board and other student groups. The celebration will follow the precedent set by such popular events as Homecoming, No Place Like Penn and Winterfest. Tangible Change is sponsoring the performance by the popular TV- and radio-show hosts in an attempt to increase the number of high-profile speakers who come to the University, according to Tangible Change Committee Chairperson Samara Barend. "Valentine's Day is not the favorite holiday of college students," the College senior said. "Our goal is to change that and bring some cheer to college students." Although the weekend's events are still in the planning stages, preliminary ideas include a match-up dating service in on-campus residences and giving out Hershey Kisses on Locust Walk. Dr. Drew and Adam -- whose full names are Drew Pinsky and Adam Corolla -- will open the show with a short presentation to be followed up by audience members' questions. Although the show will not be taped, it will follow Loveline's regular format and is expected to last about two hours. "I have no doubt that it will be sold out," said Connaissance co-director Dara Gruen, a College senior. "What really attracted them to us is that it's very interactive. It'll be enjoyable to watch our own peers ask questions that are relevant to us, or at least humorous," Barend added, noting the show's informative and amusing qualities. Loveline is currently in the midst of a college tour that includes visits to over 30 schools, including the University of Florida, Ithaca College and Vanderbilt University. Pinsky offers his professional opinion to the show's studio audience and call-in guests, while Corolla typically provides comic relief on such issues as sexually transmitted diseases, suicide, domestic violence, drug addiction and sexual dysfunction. Pinsky received his undergraduate degree from Amherst College and his M.D. from the University of Southern California School of Medicine. He is a board-certified internist and specializes in substance abuse. He has hosted Loveline, a nationally syndicated radio call-in show, for 14 years, before starting the MTV program. Corolla is a stand-up comedian who studied with the Groundling and Acme Improv groups in Los Angeles. He has appeared previously on the KROQ-FM morning show in Los Angeles. Pinsky and Corolla also published The Dr. Drew and Adam Book: A Survival Guide to Life and Love in October. Tickets for the Loveline appearance will be available on Locust Walk the week of the show. The price of the tickets has not yet been set, according to the event's organizers.
