CAMPUS BRIEFS: Thursday, July 3, 1997

Starbucks Coffee set to open Saturday July 12 Starbucks -- which specializes in coffee beverages made with espresso and steamed milk -- is most famous for serving up icy blended Frappuccinos. In addition to pastries and muffins, the University City location will also offer muffins. It will be the corporations' fourth location in Philadelphia, joining the chain's other sites at 16th and Walnut, 12th and Market and 4th and South streets. -- Shannon Burke American Diner reopens with late hours The American Diner at 42nd and Chestnut streets has reopened under new management. The "under new management, open soon" sign that graced the front of the restaurant has been replaced by a "grand opening" sign. The restaurant -- a traditional 50's-style diner -- closed for several months after 10 customers were robbed at gunpoint on Feb. 15. It is open until 1:30 on weekends. --Shannon Burke Teachers union and state near agreement Unionized teachers who work for state-owned schools have reached a tentative contract with the Commonwealth. The proposed deal would cover 110 teachers represented by the Pennsylvania State Education Association. As with other contracts reached recently with other state employee unions, the pact calls for an eight-percent pay increase over the next three years. Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on. -- Joe ReportervCAMPUS BRIEFS Study says emergency system in good shape There's no need to dramatically overhaul Pennsylvania's emergency management system, according to a legislative research panel that studied the state's response to last winter's blizzard and flooding. The panel says there are only minor improvements that can be made to the system. Its suggestions include improving communication between state agencies and local officials, and encouraging more homeowners to buy flood insurance. -- Joe Reporter Funerals underway for TWA crash victims Funeral directors in Montoursville have had to stagger the scheduling of services for the victims of the TWA Flight 800 explosion, because mourners in the close-knit town knew more than one victim and wanted to pay their respects to all of them. Eight funerals are scheduled for this weekend. -- Joe Reporter Teachers union and state near agreement Unionized teachers who work for state-owned schools have reached a tentative contract with the Commonwealth.
