Looking at what The Daily Pennsylvanian 113th Board plans to do now that it's our turn at the helm. We have all worked at The Daily Pennsylvanian for several semesters, concentrating on becoming better journalists. We've spent countless nights and days, writing news and sports articles, taking photos, designing layouts and selling advertisements. Now it's time for us to impart what we have learned to others. It is also time to take what we learned from the 112th Board and become responsible for putting out the newspaper every night. Over the past year readers have witnessed a startling change to the DP: color. Now the newspaper is visually appealing and is easy to read with color photos and graphics on the front and back pages. With our newly-created Design Department, we hope to add informative graphics to articles. But it's not just the layout that makes a good newspaper, it's also the content. Our news stories will not only tell you what happened but why it happened. Our articles list facts and will tackle larger issues at hand. We want to take a careful look at the news we are reporting. The University has announced several strategic goals for Penn, but it is not always understood what those plans mean for us. We are focusing more coverage on Philadelphia with the addition of a city editor to the board. We recognize that there is a complex relationship between the University and the city that affects every facet of life at Penn. For example, last semester's crime wave and the shooting of College senior Patrick Leroy lead to the development of UC Brite, a joint University-Philadelphia lighting program. The issues connecting theses developments and others need to be looked at in-depth by our reporters. On the Op-Ed page, look for editorials based in fact. We hope the page remains an open forum --Ea place for discussion and dialogue on a diversity of issues. If you don't like what you're reading or disagree with a column, please tell us by writing a letter to the editor. But we also hope our readers realize our columnists opinions do not reflect our own. The online version of the DP will get a face-lift this semester. We're excited to explore the possibilities in the virtual world. We all use the Internet, and making DP Interactive more user friendly is just good sense. We don't have any large sweeping plans for the newspaper as the previous editors and managers did. We're simply paying attention to the little details -- the writing, the layout, the photos and the art. We aren't going to be doing anything radically different from last year, we're just going to do it better.
