Va'ad holds elections

Haller beat out three other candidates, two of whom had served on last year's Va'ad. College sophomore David Siegel will serve as treasurer, replacing College sophomore Benjamin Rubin, who lost the race this year for chairperson. In an uncontested vote, Wharton sophomore Jessica Putterman was elected publicity chairperson, taking over the duties of Engineering junior Alan Kellman, who ran for chairperson as well. College junior Steven Ebert was the fourth candidate for chairperson in this year's election. College freshman Elie Haller and College junior Daniel Werlin will serve as members-at-large. -- Randi Feigenbaum Rodin to serve on city organization University President Judith Rodin was elected to the Board of Directors of Greater Philadelphia First at its March 17 meeting, the organization announced earlier this week. Established in 1983, GPF is an association of chief executives from 32 of the region's larger corporations. Its projects include marketing of the Philadelphia area to national and international customers, community economic development and improvement of the local business climate through job generation. Today, Rodin will join civic leaders from the West Philadelphia community and the city at large to announce a new multi-million dollar partnership between the University's Purchasing Department and local businesses. -- Lisa Levenson Nursing student wins award Earlier this month, Ellen-Marie Whelan, a pediatric nurse practitioner and doctoral student in the Nursing School, was honored with the 1994 Secretary's Award for Innovations in Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. The award was presented for her initiative in developing the West Philadelphia Community Center's Adolescent Health Clinic. The clinic has been opened for all young people in need of health advice -- from information about birth control to testing for sexually-transmitted diseases. The honor was presented to Whelan on April 11 by Donna Shalala in Washington, D.C. --Kara Blond
