Board offers healthy eating tips

Many students received healthy food and a healthy message on Locust Walk yesterday. Student Health Advisory Board members sat at a table on the Walk offering free apples, popcorn or vegetables while trying to increase student awareness about the health advisory board and promote healthy eating. Some students took the food and ran without noticing the nutrition pamphlets or the condoms scattered on the table, even though many students were asked to fill out a survey. "I feel like I know enough about nutrition already," said one woman who wished to remain nameless after taking food and leaving. "I don't really need more information from SHAB." Some students did stay to complete surveys and discuss healthy eating, however. The surveys were handed out so that the group could get student feedback on Hepatitis B and other health issues, said Director of Health Education Susan Villari, who serves as an intermediary between Student Health Services and the student body. Wharton senior and SHAB member Kincaid Coburn said he would like his group to be more known around campus. "Our name isn't really out there, although we work pretty hard," he said. "We're not being recognized by students." SHAB Co-chairperson Aly Cohen, a College senior, said she is enthusiastic about the group's success, adding that over 100 surveys were filled out. She said the board received 50 more surveys than expected. Members said they will now read each survey to get an idea of what the student body wants from Student Health Services. Villari and SHAB members said they should have additional appearances on Locust Walk to make the University population more aware of the board and health issues, and to get more feedback from students.
