Intramural playoffs near

The place was the Hutch Gymnasium courts. The time was Sunday afternoon. The teams were Sigma Nu 2 and H2O Polo in an intramural basketball game between Independent Division teams. The result was a lopsided blow-out in Sigma Nu 2's favor. In the final week of the regular season for intramural basketball, these two teams took the court with different goals in mind. The Sigma Nu 2 team was looking for a tune-up game in anticipation of the playoffs, which begin Thursday. The H2O Polo team, which is made up of members of the water polo team, was simply out to have some fun and hopefully put up a good fight. Unfortunately for H2O Polo, it did not turn out to be that simple. When the game began, Sigma Nu 2 quickly jumped out to an 11-0 lead while the H2O team struggled, throwing up wild, desperate shots in a frenzied effort to make up the deficit. At the end of the first half, the score favored Sigma Nu 2, 16-4. At the half, H2O Polo senior guard Jose Trani commented on the different attitudes of the players. "Some guys take this so seriously," he said. "We're just out here to enjoy ourselves on our off-season." The H2O players didn't enjoy themselves for long, though. Sigma Nu once again opened up the half with a dominating run, sprinting to a quick 26-4 lead. Just as it looked like the H2O team might not score a bucket at all, the points began to come a little easier. However, Sigma Nu did not let up with its offensive barrage. As the game spun out of control, Sigma Nu's Steve Arshbarger, who the referee had playfully nicknamed "Truck" during the game, got the ball just outside the three-point arc. With the referee yelling for him to shoot the three, Arshbarger threw up a prayer. "As it was going up," Arshbarger said, "I was thinking 'Wow, this will be the first one I've made all year.' " The ball banked recklessly off the backboard and fell through the hoop. The game ended anti-climactically, with the officials having stopped keeping the score in the final minutes. It looks like Sigma Nu 2 (6-0) will be advancing into the playoffs, while H2O Polo will be headed back to the pool.
