Everyone plays at Hutch

Two basketball teams took the court Friday night with a lot on the line. And although the competition was fierce, the GreekFreaks coasted to a 56-35 victory over the PiKA-B squad, and moved one step closer to that elusive intramural title. The intramural program provides a less intense way for Penn students to get a little competition without the rigors of an everyday sport. It also allows the high school athlete in everyone to continue with basketball dreams that cannot be brought to reality with the varsity squad. The intramural basketball league is composed of several divisions, including graduate student, Greek, women's and dorm teams and open entries. With sports such as soccer, football, volleyball and innertube water polo, teams are focusing all of their energies upon winning the basketball title, one of the most respected of the year. Led by team captain Michalis Stavrinides, the GreekFreaks (4-1) went into Friday night's game with a solid grasp on first place in the Independent I division. After having defeated the Delta Tau Delta-B squad 42-30 the previous week, Stavrinides was looking forward to the competition. "The games are very competitive," Stavrinides said. "Last week against DTD, I got in a fight over a loose ball and got ejected for two minutes. It is extremely intense." Stavrinides once again led his team against PiKa-B (3-2), contributing 12 points and four rebounds, helping to keep them in the hunt for the crown. If you are interested in competing in the intramural program, contact the recreation office at Gimbel Gym. For those who would just like to see an intense, heated game of basketball, intramural games are played nightly on the courts at Hutch. Go down and enjoy the fun.
