Fortin makes Olympic Trials cut

Sophomore swimmer Shelby Fortin will be going to the Olympic Trials.

Fortin did not join her team at the Total Performance Invitational at Kenyon College over the weekend, as she, in addition to teammate Kristi Edleson, swam at the U.S. Winter National Championships at Georgia Tech.

Fortin swam the 400 long course meter (LCM) freestyle — the first event of the meet — with a time of 4:17.78, a nearly two seconds under the Olympic trials qualifying time of 4:19.39. She finished 23rd in the event overall. Fortin also just missed another Trials cut in the 200m free with a 2:03.48, just .29 seconds above the qualifying time.

The 2012 Olympic Team Trials will be from June 25-July 2 in Omaha, Nebraska to determine which swimmers will represent the U.S. in the London Olympics. The top two swimmers from each event advance to the Olympics — Fortin's time currently ranks at No. 241 in the country.
