Mid-Monday Mix: homecoming kings

Penn took on three Princeton teams this homecoming Saturday and the Quakers came away 3-0 after wins in Football and men's and women's soccer. Not a bad show for the alumni crowds.

The football game drew 17,000 fans, the most for a football game since the 2005 season — and they got to see a Penn win. The Quakers overcame the most sluggish of starts to trounce the Tigers 37-9. Jen Scuteri recaps the game, which saw Penn burn the opposition with its air attack. Columnist Eli Cohen says the defense came up big at all the right times to hold Princeton to just three field goals on the day.
Men's soccer took care of Princeton for just the second time in coach Rudy Fuller's career, winning 2-1 on goals from senior Jake Levin and sophomore Stephen Baker, who was making his return from an injury a month ago.
Senior Ursula Lopez-Palm scored twice as Penn women's soccer beat Princeton 3-1. Harvard clinched the Ivy title with a win over Columbia, but Penn's win doesn't hurt as the Quakers are looking for an at-large bid into the NCAA tourney. Kenny Kasper captures the joyous mood from Senior Night.
In an open exhibition, Penn men's basketball got its final tune-up in before the regular season starts, beating Carleton (of Ontario), 74-72. The Quakers battled back in the second half and senior captain Zack Rosen sunk two free throws with 0.3 seconds left on the clock to get the win. And he got the Carleton player who fouled him to own up to it.
Volleyball split the weekend with Yale and Brown. After falling to the hot Bulldogs, the Quakers regrouped to get a win in Providence, R.I., on the Bears' senior night. Freshman Emma White came up big with 18 kills in the victory.
Sprint football closed out its season with a 38-6 win over Princeton, finishing with the best record in the Ivy League. The team placed third overall in the Collegiate Sprint Football League, behind Army and Navy.
Field Hockey finished its season with a 3-0 loss to first-place Princeton, but held the Tigers scoreless for much of the game.

Weekend win: The award for the weekend goes to the Penn Band and Cheer teams, which served double duty at the football and basketball games on Saturday. Much appreciated.
