Mid-Monday Mix: Thumbs up for Smokes' menu
I had a very Penn sports weekend, watching the football game at Smokes with the Red and Blue Crew before heading down to Rhodes Field to catch some footie. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday. I'll also give the food at Smokes a thumbs up. I know the basketball team eats pre-game meals there, so I guess they might too.
Rundown:
- It wasn't in the bag until the final seconds when Joe Holder grabbed an interception to seal Columbia's fate, but football picked up a 27-20 win over the Lions on their homecoming. Just like two weeks ago at Dartmouth, Penn needed a last-minute drive and score led by quarterback Billy Ragone. In the words of Bradford Blackmon, "If you needed to have your blood pressure checked after this game, then you are not the only one."
- Mike Wisniewski writes that Penn can't keep relying on the heart-attack inducing comeback, and needs to cut down on the mistakes before the likes of Yale comes to town this weekend.
- Men's soccer was billing Saturday's heated game against Dartmouth as 'separation Sunday,' but a ticky-tack penalty call gave the Big Green the one goal they needed to get out of dodge with a 2-1 win.
- Before Sunday, Penn field hockey had scored more than one goal once this season. Sunday, thanks to a hat trick from freshman Alex Iqbal, the Quakers exploded for 5 in a win over Appalachian State. But that was only after they dropped an Ivy match earlier this weekend.
- Women's soccer is quietly making a run at the Ivy title again. With a win over Dartmouth Saturday, the ladies notched their sixth-consecutive victory, topping the five-game streak they posted to start the season. They are still in second place, though, as one of their two losses came to Harvard.
- Not a banner weekend for volleyball, which dropped matches to lowly Brown Friday and Yale Saturday. Even after two tough losses, the team commendably took some time out to teach local middle-schoolers some volleyball skills.

Extra Extra: Shopping in FroGro this weekend, I came across this brand of pasta sauce, which I will only buy from now on. As Emiril Lagasse would say, BAM!
