Football in February...why not?

When the football team went down to Easton, Pa. and beat then-No. 22 Lafayette this season, I saw it as a moderate upset. But apparently, there's no reason Ivy League teams should be "upsetting" Patriot League counterparts in the first place.

Fresh off a year in which the Ivies beat the PL 14-4 in the season series, Leopards coach Frank Tavani is crying uncle.

"If Harvard wants someone, they are going to win 10 out of 10 battles, even in their own league," Tavani said in the Morning Call, a Lehigh Valley newspaper. "I don't think we've ever landed a kid when it was between us and Penn."

Tavani's been at Lafayette since 1999. Between 1999 and 2007, Penn's Al Bagnoli has apparently beaten him to every mutual recruit. So how on earth can Tavani's team even challenge Bagnoli's? I see two possible answers:

A: Tavani is an incredible coach who is a great talent evaluator.
B: Bagnoli is a poor coach who somehow ignores all the best players and lets Tavani get them.

I'm not sure what other inference to draw from Tavani's comments. Which answer is it? Your guess is as good as mine.

(And for the record, Lafayette kicker Rick Ziska was 38 for 38 on extra points this year. Just sayin'.)
