Finally showing up

After some fun debates about rushing the court after the Temple win, I'd like to finally give some kudos to the athletic department and especially the fans.

I went to dinner, getting out around six and arriving at the game at 6:10, and I barely made it into the first student section. A full hour before the game fans were showing up so that we didn't look weak compared to the SJU faithful. Obviously general admission wouldn't get the same results for Ivy League games, but it would make a huge difference on when fans arrive. I feel bad for the Penn players who have to warm up 30 minutes before tipoff against Columbia in front of a crowd that the JV squad would be ashamed of. Penn fans are loud and great hecklers, but are too busy to show their support for more than the required 40 minutes.

The cheers were also very creative at the game. Before I get into the positives, I have to say I cringe whenever we chant 'this is our house!' If it's our house why do we need to say it? Everyone already knows it is. Penn fans shouldn't even need to respond to St. Joes' over-used claim.
I HATE the "safety school" chant because it says 'we're rich, gifted and basically better than you', and contributes to why many people hate stereotypical Penn students, and exemplifies why we hate Princeton kids. But a fantastic variation of that was the "'Nova rejects" chant. It doesn't say 'we're better than you', but instead, just 'you suck'. Also the waving of dollar bills at the St. Joe's dance team was great. And finally, when St. Joe's fans called Stephen Danley ugly, a fan behind me yells "yea, but he has a wonderful personality". I don't know why, but that also cracked me up, wish you could form that into a chant...
