With 20 minutes of basketball gone in Syracuse, N.Y., Penn clings to a 39-38 lead over UTEP. Penn rode an 11-0 run to an early 20-9 lead, but the Miners closed the gap and eventually took the lead. A Brian Grandieri three-pointer and a Mark Zoller layup with under a minute to go brought the Quakers back from a four-point deficit.

Zoller leads the Quakers with 13 points, while Grandieri has 11. UTEP's Darren Clarke leads the Miners with 12. Ibrahim Jaaber had a quiet half, playing only 13 minutes after picking up two fouls early on. He has yet to be credited for a steal, but he has one of Penn's two three-pointers.

The Quakers are 2-10 overall from behind the arc.
