West Catholic rolls again; 'Nova women take DMR

For the second straight year, West Catholic took the Catholic League girls' 4x400-meter race. While the Burrs don't have Nicole Leach this year, they nonetheless beat the rest of the field by more than ten seconds, finishing in 3:51.75.

I admit to being a fan of the Catholic and Public League races, because a lot of the local fans went to those schools. So they all have their own little cheering sections, and after last year's stellar performance, West Catholic gets just about everyone's attention.

Back at the college level, Villanova edged out Stanford for the women's Distance Medley Relay title. The Wildcats, which had a pretty sizeable cheering section on the other side of the track from where I'm sitting, finished in 10 minutes, 57.03 seconds, with the Cardinal crossing the line in 10:58.72. Penn finished fifth, behind Ivy League rivals Brown and Princeton. The Quakers were in third for quite a while, but anchor Stacy Kim faded in the last half of the final lap.

Villanova has a long history of success in the women's DMR, having won it nine times from 1984 to 1997. But until now, that was the last time they got to hoist the big circular plaque that goes to the DMR winner.
