Not over 'til it's over

Since yesterday's action in the Lou Gehrig division was washed out, today was the penultimate test for Penn's playoff hopes.

The Quakers are still alive, but barely after today's games at Princeton. The Tigers took the opener, 4-3 in eight innings, but Penn came back to win the second, 3-2 in 10 innings, behind nine stellar frames from starter Brian Cirri.

Meanwhile up north, Cornell and Columbia split today, which means the Lions are eliminated with 13 losses. But, Columbia helped out the Quakers by defeating the Big Red once. Here are the up-to-date standings in the Gehrig:

1 Princeton 6-8, .429
2 Cornell 5-9, .357, 1 game back
3 Penn 6-12, .333, 2 games back
4 Columbia 5-13, .278, eliminated

Because the Quakers lost, they will need at least one more win by Columbia to stay in the race before Cornell plays Princeton in a four-game set next weekend. Penn must sweep tomorrow's doubleheader (a makeup for Saturday's lost games) or the season is over because it is impossible for both Cornell as Princeton to finish with 13 losses. One of those two frontrunners could finish with at most 12 losses and under the right situation, Penn could tie for the division.

We'll see what happens tomorrow afternoon.
