Five to watch

A lot of laps have already been run at Franklin Field so far, but there's a lot to come. Here are five things worth noting:

1 - Jamaica still dominates. Led by Holmwood Tech, the ladies in yellow and green have been tearing it up on day one. Tomorrow's 4x100 and 4x400 high school girls championships should have plenty of excitement.

2 - South Carolina's hanging in. The Gamecocks' women won a record four relays last year and are looking to defend their titles. So far they've made it through to the championship in two. A stiff field in the 4x400 was almost too much, though. South Carolina took the eighth and final qualifying spot with a time of 3:35.9. Miami's 3:31.1 was the best time on the track.

3 - In the stands. The crowd so far has been impressive, not suprising considering the weather. The announced day-one total was 24,480.

4 - Old rivals meet. Traditional football sparring partners Michigan and Ohio State will each be competing in a handful of events this year, starting with tonight's men's steeplechase. Brian Olinger of the Buckeyes took second in the championship event with a time of 8:45.05, six seconds behind Nicodemus Naimadu of Abilene Christian. Michigan's Andrew Bauer won the second-tier race, finishing in 9:02.37.

5 - Fashion sense? The new trend, I suppose, is to wear one high sock. Dozens of high school girls teams have been doing it so far. Some on the left leg, others go with the right. Why? I have no idea.
