Happy Monday! It’s expected to be a hot week in Philadelphia, with temperatures potentially surpassing 100 degrees — I hope you’re able to stay cool.

Derrick Wood will serve as the next chief of police for the University of Pennsylvania Police Department, and the Department of State has resumed interviews for student visa applications — now with social media vetting as part of the process.

But first, The Daily Pennsylvanian spoke with history professor Kathleen Brown — who began her tenure as chair of the Faculty Senate this month — about her plans for the Senate, her academic background, and her speech at Penn’s Commencement ceremony last month.

Meet Kathleen Brown, the historian at the helm of the Faculty Senate

As history professor Kathleen Brown steps into her new role as chair of the Faculty Senate, she described it as an opportunity to revitalize shared governance at Penn in an interview with The Daily Pennsylvanian.

Brown, who teaches the history of gender and race in early America, will serve as chair for the 2025-26 academic year. She characterized her role as an opportunity to “reinvigorate the democratic process” at Penn, an institution she said is “coming out of terrible crisis” and faces a “very tense political moment.”

 Penn approved its operating budget for fiscal year 2026 last week, which forecasts $17.7 billion and $18.1 billion in expenses and revenue for the University, respectively. 

  Vice President for Public Safety Kathleen Shields Anderson announced the appointment of Derrick Wood as the new chief of police for the University of Pennsylvania Police Department on Tuesday.

  The State Department announced Wednesday that it would resume issuing student visas for people from foreign countries — and implement stricter social media reviews as part of the process. 

 Penn researchers — in collaboration with members of Yale University’s School of Public Health — projected over 51,000 preventable deaths each year as a result of the budget reconciliation bill passed by the House of Representatives.

This week last year, Penn women’s rowing head coach Wesley Ng announced that he would depart from the program to become the next head coach of the University of Virginia women’s rowing team. This year, Meredith Schamun announced her resignation as Penn’s head volleyball coach for a coaching position at the University of Illinois.
