One for the home team

Penn's Sam Shepard got a big cheer from the crowd as he barely beat out Princeton's Richard Stewart down the stretch in the college men's Heptagonal 4x400. Penn's time of 3:12.55 was four seconds off the pace of qualifying for tomorrow's Championship of America.

The Quakers held the advantage most of the way, building a three second lead on a strong second leg. Princeton made it interesting, pulling neck-and-neck with about 50 meters to go, but Penn held on. The Tigers finished 3:12.74 followed by Cornell.

Louisiana State posted the fastest qualifying time on the day at 3:04.78 followed by Texas A&M and Abilene Christian. The marquee race will be 5:25 p.m. tomorrow.
