At first, Penn men's track Charlie Powell was pretty vanilla when asked for his thoughts on the Heps 4x400-meter relay.

While I was down on the infield watching the hurdles, the Masters 100-meter races were going on. They always get the crowd's attention, not least because there are a lot of people the same age in the crowd.
It's a good day to be a Longhorn today at Franklin Field. The burnt orange edged out Arkansas and Michigan, two teams that have had a stranglehold recently on the men's DMR. It was Texas first win in the event, although the time of 9:33.10 wasn't astonishing.
A lot of laps have already been run at Franklin Field so far, but there's a lot to come. Here are five things worth noting:
New Penn coach Glen Miller got off to a good start in my book at his introductory press conference.
Today was Glen Miller's first day at the Palestra as the new Penn basketball coach. Just about everybody there was optimistic about the future of the former Brown headman.
Since yesterday's action in the Lou Gehrig division was washed out, today was the penultimate test for Penn's playoff hopes.
I attended my first Penn baseball games of the year this weekend, and all I can is "yuck."
And by postgame analysis, I mean that literally. Because for the second year in a row, Penn was not represented in that longtime CBS tradition, the "One Shining Moment" montage. Texas was a couple times, and I'm pretty sure the shot of the Longhorns human-sized mascot (as opposed to the real steer, Bevo, who comes to football games) was taken in Dallas.
Major kudos to the men's lacrosse team for its win over Cornell the nation's second-ranked team -- today at Franklin Field.
There aren't too many good things about losing in the NCAA Tournament, but there is some consolation in seeing the team that beat you advance deep. Texas held its own in this year's tournament by advancing to the round of eight, something only one other team had done since 1987.
What did I do tonight after spending a week in Dallas for the NCAA Tournament? I headed to the Wachovia Center. But it wasn't to catch a sporting event. Instead, I saw a Billy Joel concert.
Don't think we're enjoying picturesque days down here on the plains. Today was rainy and dark, not unlike a March day in Philadelphia.
This is the most exciting week of the year. The NCAA Tournament is just hours (yes, I'm counting in hours) away, and there's no denying college hoops fans can't wait to get the show on the road. Here are a few odds and ends from the sea of tourney hype:
I had the pleasure recently of interviewing Andrew Baratta, a former Penn basketball player who has just published a novel called What Color Justice. There will be a review of the book next week in the DP when the print edition comes back from its Spring Break hiatus, though I will say here that I greately enjoyed reading it. If you are thinking about going to the NCAA Tournament to watch Penn, you should buy the book to read on the plane -- and do so now, because you may have to get it off Amazon.com since it's very hard to find in stores.

Another day of conference tournament action is in the books and things are looking pretty bleak for Penn's chances of moving up to a No. 13 seed in the NCAA Tournament. That being said, here's all you need to know for today's games:
Here's all the information a Penn fan needs after another day of conference tournament action:
All season long, I have been busting the chops of the voters in the CollegeInsider.com Mid Major Top 25. Each week, I have pointed out how many undeserving teams made it into the Top 25 while others (such as Penn) were left out.
Against Harvard, the Quakers may have won a close game, something they have failed to do often recently (Saint Joseph's, Temple in each of the past three years, Brown and Yale two years ago, etc.)
