M. Hoops Villanova notes

(12/09/10 5:12pm)

I covered last year's game at Villanova and was in attendance last night. This was certainly not the same Villanova offense. Last year, the Wildcats ran all over the Quakers and it was at times embarrassing to watch. This year, Villanova went through stagnant stretches and failed to take advantage of its size and athleticism in the frontcourt. But some credit has to go to Penn for dictating the pace by slowing it down, standing strong on the interior, and holding the Wildcats to a season-low 65 points. The Quakers actually held a 22-18 advantage in points in the paint.

Weekend roundup

(10/25/10 3:54pm)

It was an extremely busy and mostly fruitful weekend for the Quakers, so here's a roundup of what's in this muggy Monday's DP: Penn football tops Yale to remain atop Ivy League. The Quakers' defense came up big in the win. Fans, and for the first time players, camped out at the Palestra in the annual Line event, despite what some called a 'disappointing' turnout. Volleyball won both Ivy matches for a third straight weekend, remaining tied with Princeton in first place. Men's soccer recorded another shutout (surprise!), taking down Yale. Women's soccer also shut out the Bulldogs in a 1-0 win. Field Hockey took a 10-0 loss to Yale, snapping a modest two-game winning streak. If the week is any more action packed than this weekend, we're going to need a bigger server.

Sources: Glen Miller returns to UConn

(06/24/10 1:44am)

In a move that had been speculated in the rumor mill over the past few weeks, the Journal Inquirer is reporting that ex-Penn basketball head coach Glen Miller will be hired as the director of basketball administration at the University of Connecticut. The official announcement should come in the next day or two, the article states, meaning Miller will have gone unemployed for about five months since his firing from Penn in December of last year.

More from Allen, Dunphy and recruits

(01/13/10 8:22am)

In an exciting event for me as an aspiring journalist, the New York Times used some quotes from my preview of tonight's Penn-Temple matchup in a post about the game on their college sports blog. Given the apparent popularity of some of the comments these guys made, I figured I'd share some other worthwhile items from my interviews that weren't in the story. Also after the jump, an update on two of Penn's recruits.
