Editorial | NCAA was fair in its punishment

(07/26/12 2:18am)

On Monday, the NCAA took drastic disciplinary action against Pennsylvania State University in response to a damning report implicating top university officials in a cover-up of child sexual abuse. While detractors have criticized the unprecedented nature of the sanctions, the response was justified by the unprecedented nature of an atrocity enabled by a culture of football worship.

Editorial | Student debt solutions

(07/12/12 1:47am)

The picture of student debt in the United States is not pretty. According to The New York Times, there is more than $1 trillion in outstanding student loans — more than the nation’s collective credit card debt. While the number of borrowers has vastly increased in the past several decades — over two-thirds of undergraduates now take out a loan to pay for school — student debt is aging with the population. Over 20 percent of outstanding debt is owed by people over 50 years old.

Editorial | Soda ban not too sweet

(06/14/12 1:52am)

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg recently proposed controversial restrictions on the sale of large, sugary drinks. The proposed limit would cap serving sizes in restaurants, delis and food carts at 16 ounces. In the face of an increasingly urgent obesity epidemic, it should be no surprise that city governments have taken to stepping in. Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter announced his support for the proposal and said that Philadelphia would look into pushing a similar initiative. Despite the endorsement, this particular measure would fail to have any significant impact. Reforms beyond the limited scope of Bloomberg’s proposal are necessary to combat the ever-expanding waistlines of America’s cities.

Editorial | Dangerous debit cards

(06/07/12 12:04am)

A recent report released by the New Jersey Public Interest Group indicted many colleges and universities for partnering with financial institutions in a way that could exploit students. The report indicates that over nine million students have bank-affiliated student debit cards. While such an arrangement is not necessarily unfair, conflicts of interest easily arise when schools have obligations to certain banks.

Editorial | Another stride to equality

(05/23/12 11:39pm)

The University announced this week that it will implement a program to compensate employees in same-sex domestic partnerships for taxes paid on health care for their partners. They may receive an additional $125 per month or $1,500 per year to make up for the tax breaks on health care not afforded to them. This policy demonstrates Penn’s leadership and commitment to the goal of equality for all people, regardless of sexual orientation, and we commend the University on its decision.

Editorial | How sexual assault stacks up

(04/11/12 5:54am)

Penn’s announcement yesterday that will require less evidence to find students guilty of sexual assault did not come without controversy. Previously, the University required “clear and convincing evidence” to move forward with a case. Now, it only requires evidence that it was more probable than not that a student was involved in an incident for him or her to be found guilty.
