The most iconic moments from Kobe Bryant’s 20 years on the Los Angeles Lakers will forever be immortalized in basketball lore — the alley-oop pass to Shaquille O'Neal in Game 7, the 81-point explosion, the 60-point farewell, the list goes on. But before the world came to know Bryant — who died tragically on Jan. 26 in a helicopter crash along with his daughter Gianna and seven others — his organized basketball career took shape miles from Penn’s campus at Lower Merion High School in Ardmore, Pa.

Seniors Phoebe Sterba and Kendall Grasela have accomplished an impressive list of feats during their careers for Penn women’s basketball: two Ivy League regular season championships, an NCAA Tournament appearance, a Big 5 championship, and 56 combined starts. For the 2019-20 season, they have both been named captains and will be expected to lead a team that once again has championship aspirations.

It was March 22, 2012 — Antonio Woods was a sophomore in high school. His Cincinnati school, Summit Country Day, had just advanced to the Ohio Division III State Championship basketball game by beating Bedford St. Peter 49-41 in Ohio State’s Value City Arena. But all was not well for Woods and his team, even as they moved within one win of the school’s first-ever state championship.
