Senior Column by Lauren Feiner | Part student, part journalist

(05/12/17 7:33pm)

On the night of Nov. 8, 2016, while the world watched the unexpected ascent of Donald Trump to the presidency, I had one mission: to put out a paper. This goal — which was hard enough on any less eventful day — required rallying reporters across campus (and in New York) to submit articles and photos and getting dozens of editors to headline, caption and design the print product. Not to mention asking them to put aside their reactions to the world-changing event unfolding in front of them.

Columbia band slams Penn in chant about Trump, OZ

(10/15/16 9:28pm)

While Penn football was up 7-0 at halftime in Saturday's game  against Columbia at Franklin Field, the Lions' band made a fierce attack at the home team.In a poem recited over the loudspeaker, Alex Della Santina, a member of the Columbia band, took shots at 1968 Wharton graduate Donald Trump and off-campus organization OZ for recent comments that have been associated with rape culture.Referring to Trump, the poem read, "Heck were you thinking/Admitting this guy?/We get you need money,/But him? Dear God, WHY?" It went on to talk about Trump's recently leaked comments in a conversation with TV host Billy Bush in 2005 where Trump bragged he could "grab [women] by the pussy.""Unfortunately, Penn,/You’re not in the clear,/‘cause locker room talk,/Also happens here!" the poem went on. "An email went out,/From a frat called OZ,/Demanding girls in tight dresses/Who won’t be a tease."Members of the Penn Band were not amused by Columbia's jokes, however.“We dont condone jokes about sexual assault, that's not something you'd like to hear anybody joke about," Penn Band Treasurer and Wharton junior Laura Kuder said. The full transcript of the poem can be found below, courtesy of Della Santina:"We all know Trump went to Penn,That’s not confidentialAnd he’s now the candidateThat’s least reverentialHe’s racist and sexistAnd also a jerkAnd let’s not get intoThat awful smug smirkYou just can’t deny it,You did let him in.And we could blame you,If the election he wins. But Trump’s numbers plummet,And Republicans are stuck,But to his alma mater,We say “Penn, what the…”Heck were you thinkingAdmitting this guy?We get you need money,But him? Dear God, WHY?Just last week in fact,We all heard the tapeWhere a certain nomineeBragged about… getting away with sexually assaulting unconsenting women.Unfortunately, Penn,You’re not in the clear,‘cause locker room talk,Also happens here!An email went out,From a frat called OZ,Demanding girls in tight dressesWho won’t be a tease.Come on, Penn boys! You can’t be this thick!Women aren’t toysAnd will cut off your… scholarship. But before we leave you todayWe’ll play you a songIn honor of Penn MenWe now form a dong

'Rape culture' flyers prompt Penn community to speak out online against sexual assault

(09/06/16 6:37pm)

Students woke up to hundred of flyers plastering campus, declaring, "This is what rape culture looks like." The flyers included part of an email sent by ozyellowbrickroad1@gmail.com that told "ladies," “May we have your attention please/We’re looking for the fun ones/And say f**k off to a tease.” Similar emails referring to the same event, "Wild Wednesday," had been sent by variations of the ozyellowbrickroad email, and had been connected to off-campus organization OZ. The Penn community took to social media to speak out largely in support of protesters who hung the flyers.

From the Editor: Timeline of our Cruz-Rubio reporting

(02/23/16 12:00am)

On Monday afternoon, Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz asked for the resignation of his Communications Director Rick Tyler, after Tyler had posted and retracted a link to a post on The Daily Pennsylvanian’s DPolitics blog. In an effort to clarify the series of events that informed our reporting, The Daily Pennsylvanian has created a timeline of our account.
