Penn women’s lacrosse met Georgetown in Syracuse, N.Y., for a Friday afternoon matchup in the first round of the NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Tournament. The two teams met earlier this season in March, when the Quakers eked out an 8-7 victory against the visiting Hoyas at Franklin Field.

With one player each from Canada, Croatia, Poland, and Russia, the 2019 Penn women’s tennis roster features 10 student-athletes who represent a greater number of countries than they do states. Ever since coach Sanela Kunovac took the reigns of the program, however, that kind of roster composition has been anything but abnormal.

Caroline Furrer had led the team through a tumultuous year, dealing with what she sees as a problematic new coach and a negligent administration. On the court, she was one of the team’s stars during one of the worst seasons in program history. Off the court, she was one of the team’s fiercest advocates in its fight to be heard and taken seriously.

Not one. Not two. Not three. Not even four. Two torn anterior cruciate ligaments and three torn menisci made five the number of injuries for Penn women’s lacrosse’s Liv Smith, who has triumphantly taken the field for the Red and Blue after nearly two years on the sidelines.

It didn’t take long for Penn men’s tennis’ senior star Kyle Mautner to become an integral part of the program — as a freshman, Mautner immediately rose to the top of the Quakers’ lineup and earned first team All-Ivy recognition — but he’s still come a long way over the course of his four years representing the Red and Blue.

Coming fresh off a doubleheader sweep in a series win over Harvard, Penn softball couldn’t manage to stick to its winning ways and suffered an unexpected loss to Rider at Penn Park on Wednesday afternoon.

The Quakers perhaps would have been excused if they had come out sluggish in the first round of the Women’s National Invitation Tournament. After all, they are just one week removed from a heartbreaking loss at the hands of Princeton in the Ivy League Tournament championship game. But Penn did just the opposite on Friday night when it dispatched American at the Palestra, 64-45.

Don’t look now, but the Quakers are streaking.

The Ivy League Basketball Tournament is here, and second-seeded Penn women’s basketball will take on third-seeded Harvard Saturday night at Yale’s John J. Lee Amphitheater. The Quakers (22-5, 12-2 Ivy) and Crimson (16-11, 9-5) split their two regular-season matchups — both of which ended in dramatic overtime fashion — so the Red and Blue can expect a tough contest as they fight for a berth to the Ivy title game. Here are some keys for Penn to come out on top.

It wasn’t supposed to go this way.

Penn’s student-athletes might be able to lift heavier weights and run faster than most, but they do their hard work on and off their respective playing surfaces to the same tune as everyone else.

With the help of a double-digit halftime lead, Penn women’s basketball was able to hang on to defeat a visiting Yale team, 54-48, on the second night of a back-to-back. It was certainly a little too close for comfort, but the Quakers showed their winning, even-keeled character while withstanding the Bulldogs’ second-half rally. Here’s what we learned from the Red and Blue’s victory.

There’s a lot of basketball left to be played, but with four Ivy League games in the books, the Quakers are doing exactly what’s expected of them.

The Quakers were aggressive and effective all night on the defensive end; it was only a matter of time before the offense followed suit.

Opportunity knocked this afternoon, and Penn men’s basketball answered once more. In the team's first game back since its dramatic win against No. 17 Villanova at the Palestra, the Quakers looked to keep rolling in a road test against New Mexico.

For a while it was a little too close for comfort, but Penn women’s basketball eventually put together another commanding performance to head into a nearly two-week hiatus with a win on the road.
