The college admissions scandal that came to light last week, in which the privileged were found to have bought their way into the nation’s top universities, in some cases even by going to such extremes as falsifying students’ races and ethnicities, has opened yet another chapter in the seemingly endless debate on affirmative action. Is this current spate of wealthy students, who many believe took the spots of those who are more qualified (or at least more eager) to attend, going to face the same backlash that students of color receive daily for being recipients of affirmative action?

Penn’s long and sordid history of the expansion and displacement of thousands of indigent Philadelphians — a process known as “Penntrification” — is hardly a secret. Many humanities classes study it as a microcosm for urban renewal gone awry, and a Google search will tell you all you need to know in seconds. And the problem is exacerbated by our complacency.

When I first visited Penn, what caught my eye, oddly enough, wasn’t the stunning architecture of the quad, where I currently happily live, but the high rises. Maybe it was because the “NYC” in me thought it was the closest thing to living in an apartment building in Manhattan, or maybe it was because I thought the large number of floor-to-ceiling windows would provide a beautiful view of the Philadelphia skyline. Whatever it was, I knew that I wanted to live in them for at least one year.

On Thursday, I, along with 80 or so fellow students of color, was told by white, self-proclaimed "secular conservative" Heather Mac Donald that racism on college campuses ended decades ago.
