The de-facto Ivy League men’s soccer championship took place on Saturday, and it did not disappoint. Penn ended up on top, 3-2, on an 89th minute goal by sophomore defender Leo Burney, in a back and forth matchup with No. 15 Cornell.

Over a century ago, before the playgrounds of New York and the gyms of LA were hotbeds of youth basketball talent, the best players in the country hailed from South Philadelphia. In particular, the rivalry between South Philadelphia High School and Central High School was where the best talent was found. Children of Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe filled the teams on both sides of the rivalry.

The start of November is an eventful time for Penn Athletics. With fall sports wrapping up and winter sports beginning, there is no other time quite so exciting for the Quakers. With that in mind, let's take a look back at important events that occurred this week in Penn sports history:

This Saturday, the Red and Blue will travel an hour north to Fisher Stadium to take on Lafayette (0-3). After a convincing 30-6 win in their opener last Saturday, the Quakers are looking to ride the momentum to a 2-0 start and head into their first league game, against defending co-champion Dartmouth on Oct. 1, undefeated.
This Saturday’s matchup is the 40th between these two teams since 1946 and the first since 2019. The teams have split the last 10 matchups, but Penn leads the all-time series 27-13. The Quakers are looking to add on to their two-game series winning streak and spoil family weekend at Fisher Stadium. Meanwhile, the Leopards are searching for their first win of the season.
Last weekend, the Quakers, led by a combination of veterans and rookies, were able to easily triumph over Bucknell (0-3). Prince Emili, a sixth-year senior and a leader on the defensive unit, opened the season with a sack and two tackles for a loss.

Since the NCAA created the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament in 1982, schools from the Ivy League have qualified for the tournament 27 times. The Ancient Eight used to send their conference champion to the tournament, but since the introduction of the Ivy League Tournament in 2017, the winner of the tournament has played in March Madness.
