In 1979, Jimmy Carter was President of the United States, Superman was the highest-grossing movie in America, and, for about three weeks in March, Penn men’s basketball was atop the world. After going 13-1 in Ivy League play and clinching the second of five straight conference titles under then-head coach Bob Weinhauer, the Quakers secured a spot in the March Madness tournament. But that was only where the magic began.

After 715 days of a snowless city, Philadelphia found itself covered in a sheet of white, receiving over an inch of snow. Beginning Monday afternoon and heading into Tuesday, snow started accumulating at Penn, with the roofs of buildings, parked vehicles, and the College green.

Facing widespread national scrutiny and intensifying calls for her resignation throughout the fall semester, Penn President Liz Magill announced on Dec. 9 that she would step down after being in office for only 16 months. Her tenure will be the shortest of any permanent University president in Penn's history and one marked by heightened levels of student activism on campus. Magill is also the first Penn president to resign beyond a government appointment.
