Penn has been receiving national media coverage lately after Penn Law professor Amy Wax made racist comments against Asian and Black Americans. Her recent remarks are consistent with the comments that she made back in 2018 in a discussion titled The Downside to Social Uplift: "I don't think I've ever seen a Black student graduate in the top quarter of the [Penn Law School] class and rarely, rarely in the top half.” Essentially, her argument was that Black students are accepted into schools like Penn because of policies such as affirmative action, but underperform compared to their peers of other races.

A few weeks ago, the College Dean’s Advisory Board hosted the event “Deconstructing the Penn Face.” A panel of upperclassmen shared advice about navigating “Penn Face” and the challenges they’ve encountered. The design of the flyers promoting the event made the focus clear. The phrase “Penn Face” was in large print at the top, and “discussing mental wellness and how to thrive at Penn,” although arguably more important, was in small font at the bottom. Though a simple example, that flyer represents how we, as a school, view Penn Face: the center of our conversations about mental wellness.

Penn reached an impressive milestone recently. 99% of undergraduate students are fully vaccinated. With a 0.31% positivity rate, one would consider Penn to be a relatively COVID-safe campus.

As the conversation around fraternity culture at Penn continues in the wake of the Castle assault, I can’t help but feel far removed from the issue to begin with. I pass Castle almost every day on Locust Walk, but I know I will probably never step foot inside.
