Asian American Studies prof.’s departure reignites concern over lack of support for program

David Eng, a professor of the Asian American Studies Program, is slated to leave the University in the coming weeks as a result of a longstanding issue of declining support for the program — leaving community members with a sinking feeling about the entire future of Asian American Studies at Penn.

Although Penn announced a $100 million contribution to the School District of Philadelphia, the University did not pay Payments in Lieu of Taxes, financial contributions that property tax-exempt organizations voluntarily make to local governments, this year. While students have been calling on Penn to pay PILOTs for decades, demands were reignited by the Black Lives Matter movement and protests against systemic racism this summer.



Students celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Week with online games and Zoom concerts

Penn's 27th annual Asian Pacific American Heritage Week took place virtually for the first time this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Usually celebrated with free food and community-building performances, Penn students instead celebrated APAHW with Among Us competitions and Zoom concerts this year.
